OTD 1981: Superman II opens in the U.S.. Despite its age and the frequent tonal shifts between the visions of original director Richard Donner and replacement Richard Lester, this remains one of the best superhero movies ever made. I actually prefer Lester's theatrical cut to the so-called Donner cut btw. Donner didn't finish his film before the Salkinds fired him thus it feels somewhat incomplete and the ending doesn't work as well IMHO.

Much has been made of director Joel Schumacher's preferred cut, which is apparently a big jump up in quality. Although WB put the kibosh on a recent unofficial screening, my guess is we'll have the chance to see it at some point.
